Gluten-free on vacation ; tips & tricks

The sun is shining and with the summer holidays just around the corner, many people are going on holiday again. Some stay in their own country, but there are also many who go abroad by train, bus, plane or car. With celiac disease, there is just a little more to prepare. We provide tips and tricks that you can pay attention to to enjoy a carefree holiday.

  • Do your research in advance about the country and the area you are going to. What about the gluten free facilities here? Is there a lot of supply in the local supermarkets? Are there restaurants where you can eat gluten-free? Please email or call some nearby eateries in advance to ask if they have gluten-free options and how they deal with cross-contamination. Tip! Do you have Facebook? Then check out the special gluten-free groups that are available and use the search function to see if there are any experiences.
  • Of course, also inquire in advance about the gluten-free options at your accommodation. Are there few or no options? Then ask if it is possible to bring your own gluten-free products and if you are allowed to eat them. Always do this in consultation to avoid misunderstandings.
  • Are you taking a suitcase (hold luggage) with you on holiday? Put some non-perishable products in your suitcase. Think of cookies / crackers etc. Always handy to have and in case of emergency you always have something at hand.
  • Are you going by plane? Did you know that many airlines allow you to take extra luggage with you if you have a dietary statement? You can request this dietary declaration in advance from your doctor and then submit it to your airline. Do this well in advance so that everything is arranged when you leave.
  • Are you a member of the Dutch Celiac Association? Then request the free digital diet translation! You can also request a printed version of the dietary statement. It is important that you request this on time, because it takes a few days before you receive it.
